GENOA Extension

After our ski days, we will travel by bus back to Genoa, Italy to enjoy all it offers. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors on the Italian Riviera, Genoa is a city that rewards the curious traveler with a rich tapestry of history, art, and authentic Ligurian life. As the birthplace of Christopher Columbus and a former maritime republic of immense power, Genoa’s legacy as a port city is visible everywhere, from its bustling harbor to its labyrinthine medieval alleys, known as caruggi. The city is a fascinating blend of old and new, where grand palaces and ancient churches stand in stark contrast to modern developments and a vibrant, unpretentious atmosphere. Genoa’s unique character makes it an ideal base for exploring the stunning Ligurian coastline while offering a deep dive into an authentic, less-touristy part of Italy.

The city’s historical heart is a dense, captivating maze of narrow streets and hidden squares, a testament to its medieval past. Wandering through the caruggi feels like stepping back in time, with artisan workshops, fragrant bakeries, and small trattorias tucked into every corner. It’s in this area that you’ll find some of Genoa’s most treasured sights, including the stunning Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, with its distinctive black-and-white striped facade, and the grand Palazzi dei Rolli on Via Garibaldi, a UNESCO World Heritage site showcasing the immense wealth of Genoa’s noble families.

Beyond the historical center, Genoa’s modern side offers its own delights. The Porto Antico (Old Port), masterfully redesigned by architect Renzo Piano, is now a lively hub with cultural attractions, the famous Aquarium of Genoa, and a chance to see a replica of a 17th-century galleon. From the port, you can also take a ride on the Bigo panoramic lift for a unique 360-degree view of the city. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie eager to taste the best pesto, or simply looking to soak up genuine Italian culture, Genoa offers a captivating and rewarding experience.

While in Genoa we will be staying at Star Hotels President. This hotel is centrally located and is less than a block from the train station.

Daytrip Ideas:

Camogli –  Camogli is a fishing village and tourist resort located on the west side of the peninsula of Portofino, on the Golfo Paradiso in the Riviera di Levante.

Portofino – Portofino is a fishing village on the Italian Riviera coastline, southeast of Genoa city. Pastel-colored houses, high-end boutiques and seafood restaurants fringe its Piazzetta, a small, cobbled square overlooking the harbor, which is lined with super-yachts. A path leads from the Piazzetta to Castello Brown, a 16th-century fortress and museum with art exhibitions and panoramic views of the town and the Ligurian Sea.

Cinque Terre –   The Cinque Terre, or “Five Lands,” is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Italy’s most famous and picturesque destinations. Comprising five cliffside fishing villages—Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare—this area is renowned for its colorful houses, rugged coastline, terraced vineyards, and stunning hiking trails.

While it’s a popular destination in its own right, its proximity to Genoa makes it a perfect day trip for those looking to experience a different side of the Italian Riviera. By Train: Direct Intercity trains run frequently from Genoa’s main stations (Genova Piazza Principe or Genova Brignole) to the Cinque Terre villages. The journey to the first village, Monterosso al Mare, can be as fast as an hour. Regional trains are also an option, though they may take longer. Many travelers choose to go directly to Riomaggiore, the southernmost village, and then work their way north.

Each of the five villages has its own unique character.

Monterosso al Mare: The largest of the five, Monterosso is known for its long, sandy beach—a rarity in the Cinque Terre. It’s a great place for swimming and relaxing.

Vernazza: Often considered the most beautiful, Vernazza features a picturesque harbor, a lively main square, and a ruined castle offering breathtaking views. It’s a classic photo spot.

Corniglia: Perched high on a clifftop, Corniglia is the only village not directly on the sea. It’s quieter and less crowded than the others and offers fantastic panoramic views of the coastline. Be prepared for a climb from the train station!

Manarola: This village is famous for its iconic postcard view of colorful houses stacked on the cliffsides. It’s an excellent place to watch the sunset, and there are many vineyards and walking paths to explore.

Riomaggiore: The southernmost village, Riomaggiore is known for its tiny harbor, dramatic cliffs, and a vibrant atmosphere. It’s a great starting point for your trip if you’re traveling north.

Pisa: Further east you could travel by train to the famed tower of Pisa.  This is roughly 3.5 hours by train and could be combined with the other destinations above for a long day trip.

Florence:  Too much to include here but David, DaVinci, Medici’s and more. There is a direct train at 6 AM that takes you here in 2 hours and 24 mins. Other train times may be longer, but certainly worth the trip. La Giostra here we come!!

Nice: France for a day!!!
